We did end up with a break winner and it was the only rider left standing from the original move, Jan Polanc , who took a wonderful win, holding off the GC favourites. Behind, Zakarin attacked and gained back some of the time he lost the other day coming home solo in second place, with Thomas winning the GC bunch sprint for 3rd. In fact, we only have one Cat-4 climb to reward the breakaway with KOM points. However, the rest of the stage is almost pan-flat for the remaining 60km as the road hugs the Sicilian coast line so the sprint teams will hope to use that to pull back any break. As you can see it is a fairly technical finish with a few degree turns littered throughout the circuit.

It's no secret that the reactions of sprinters who are defeated vary wildly. Some refuse to talk to media at all and chew over their defeat on their team bus, others harangue their rivals or lead-out men. But in Greipel's case at Messina, minutes after finishing fourth to Gaviria, he recognised honestly that his team and rivals had done their jobs perfectly, and he just chose poorly. Greipel agreed the sprint had been chaotic but recognised that he had been swamped by his rivals when they came to the front, and then to cap it all off, he had started his sprint from too far out. Lotto Soudal had worked hard in the closing kilometres of the stage as a sprint became all but inevitable, and as Greipel said, "The team had done a really great job to keep me up in front, I had a little problem in the U-turn in the city, so I lost some positions there. Greipel denied that he might be feeling the knock-on effects of an ascent of Mount Etna the day before, saying, "It's the same for everybody.

Hills in the first half, flat coastal roads in the second. So that's sprinter's alert in Messina After three days on Sardinia and a two-days stay on Sicilian soil the mainland ushers in the pink peloton. But first the Pedara-Messina stage. After the start in Pedara the road goes down a little.

Another short stage along the coast awaits the peloton.

The Colombian sprinter was positioned a long way back with a kilometre to go, but was brought back into a perfect position by a strong Quick-Step Floors lead-out effort. With m to go on the flat finish in Messina, Gaviria was perfectly positioned on the wheel of Irishman Sam Bennett Bora-Hansgrohe and when Bennett opened his sprint, Gaviria was able to come round the outside, comfortably taking the stage win ahead of Jakub Mareczko Wilier Triestina who edged out Bennett for second. Quick-Step Floors, looking after the pink jersey of Bob Jungels, showed little interest in chasing, allowing the duo out front to establish a lead of which remained steady for much of the day. The only classified climb of the day came after just 38km into the stage, with Shalunov taking maximum points ahead of Paterski, while Daniel Teklehaimanot Dimension Data clipped off the front of the bunch to take the one remaining point to marginally tighten his grip on the blue jersey. This pattern was repeated a few kilometres later at the second intermediate sprint, with Paterski once again crossed the line first while Gaviria jumped out of the pack to take more points.

This is a wavy stage in the first part at the foot of the Etna running across a number of towns with the usual road furniture obstacles. After the Alcantara Valley and Taormina, the course becomes flat along the coast and the final part features a circuit in Messina. We wanted to take this jersey, we managed to get the points we needed and we did it in the best way. The duo was caught with about 15 kilometers remaining. He saluted as he crossed the line as thousands of puzzled fans looked on. Pibernik, 23, quickly realized his embarrassing gaffe before being swallowed up by the peloton as they began the final circuit. Bahrain-Merida team leader and defending Giro champion Vincenzo Nibali later explained what had confused his young teammate.

One-day races and Classics. However, experts such as Michele Bartoli have said Nibali is most suited to competing in multi-stage races. Nibali is an all-rounder, and is considered one of the strongest stage race riders of his era.
