It contains material from their latest release at the time Fear of the Dark until Somewhere in Time. Also, 5 of the 11 songs are from their latest release, Fear of the Dark. I can understand that they were trying to promote their new album, but did they have to include all of those songs on a live album? You might as well have just bought the Fear of the Dark album.

Eight years after the colossal Live After Death , Iron Maiden have another four studio albums to plunder for their setlist. And so they decide it is time for another live album. A Real Live One was released under the most depressing circumstances of any Maiden album in history, in the immediate aftermath of Bruce Dickinson announcing his departure from the band. Maiden had been through a year of European success and American failure in with the Fear Of The Dark album and tour, and would face emotional torture in as the tour resumed and turned into a painfully drawn-out Dickinson farewell. Into Darkness, Steve Harris ultimately decided not to retire the band, soldiered on through the Real Live Tour , and started looking for a new singer. On top of this, against the advice of manager Rod Smallwood , Harris had also decided to take on the responsibility of being the Iron Maiden record producer.
The album tracks were recorded at 9 different venues in Europe on the Fear of the Dark Tour. This album features songs from the Somewhere in Time through Fear of the Dark eras, while counterpart A Real Dead One only contains songs from the pre- Somewhere in Time albums. The album cover was made by longtime Iron Maiden cover artist Derek Riggs , whose work for the Fear of the Dark album was rejected.
