Audi's fashion-forward fastback powers into its second generation with an eye toward the future of luxury. All-wheel drive systems like Audi's fabled Quattro have long done a good job of mitigating Mother Nature's punch, but even she can't always be denied. That was exactly the case in February, when nasty winter weather snarled air travel and prevented our man Tim Stevens from getting to the international launch of the Audi A7 in South Africa. I felt genuinely bad for our editor in chief, but I was also quite pleased to belatedly score Roadshow's first drive of this second-generation slipstream four-door in its native element -- on the German Autobahn -- earlier this month. First things first: You should know something about me, your author. My family owns a first-generation Audi A7 , and while it's a relatively recent certified pre-owned purchase, we've found it to be a superlative and coddling performer. You may therefore choose to label this first drive story as either "biased," or give me the benefit of the doubt in believing that I know more about the A7's historic virtues and vices than the average bear.

It looks even lower still because of a design trick applied to the arching roofline — Audi designers stamped a crease into the edge of the roof that tricks the eye into seeing that slightly lower part as the corner of the roof, visually lowering the already low car. This lowered roofline, and correspondingly reduced headroom, has only a negligible impact on comfort, as your six-foot correspondent had ample headroom in the front and rear seats of the A7. It also has no negative impact on cargo space — quite the contrary, actually. The A7 offers up Combine that with the wide aperture of the rear hatch, and the A7 is not only more stylish, but more versatile, too. Russo minimized this by wrapping the spoiler over the rear of the car so the rear-most shut line is under the rear lip of the hatch where it is out of view.

You wanted Audis to look a bit different, and carry some bravado? Here you go. Audis always major on design attention to detail, often more than absolute driving pin-sharpness. A great deal of A7 Mk2 is shared with the latest Audi A8 — the chassis building blocks now much more prevalent in steel than aluminium , the interior technology, and the mild-hybrid volt drivetrains. The Audi A7 Sportback adapts the formula of the original car to make a more resolved and desirable package. Not only is the design more cohesive and appealing, but the car is also lighter and better to drive. The Audi A7 Sportback lines up for sale alongside the A6 saloon as a premium model with a more practical hatchback body. At one end of the price spectrum you could save a bit of cash and forego the sporty looks of the A7 by choosing the A6 or any of its saloon car rivals. Meanwhile buyers at the top end of the A7 price spectrum might even consider a Tesla Model S as an alternative, especially if it's a company car. Like the A6, there are Sport and S line trims, while the high-spec Vorsprung model is an even posher version of the Black Edition that has been offered in the past.
